The butterfly is a stand in for all native species and the environment they inhabit.

You will have noticed I have pulled a trick that I have used previously where I alter the markings on the forewings to represent impact forces and help tell my story. In this case a chap mowing a lawn, saw blades, wheelbarrows, spades and chainsaws and so on.

The title the Midnight Club is a nod to the students I shared my time with at Ara back in the day.

After someone cut their finger off working on the table saw in the woodwork room at 3am, somebody wise enforced a 12 midnight limit on when you could work. I spent countless hours at Polytech during my degree with some very long day and late nights but I never stayed until midnight like many others.

I wanted to acknowledge the effort and togetherness we all experienced while we worked through that really pivotable time. – Ben Reid
