Luscious 50 Years In Paint
The title Luscious was chosen for this exhibition to capture the emotional response I feel about our natural environment, the colours, textures, and sounds that engage my senses and can carry me into a different realm of being.
This collection of paintings gather inspiration from around New Zealand, including the Sub Antarctics. The work has a quiet presence, featuring many of my favourite bird species and within a variety of habitats. The paintings invite you to enter a world away from everyday stresses and feel the calm.
My energy for painting and depicting our natural environment began in early 1976 when my first group show occurred in Wellington. From there on I’ve held 35 solo shows, and 13 major joint shows with fellow painter Max Podstolski and have been included in 29 group shows, bringing a total of 77 shows in 50 years. Over that time, I’ve also undertaking well over a hundred commissions. I have exhibited in 29 different galleries in both the North and South Island in the past 50 years. All have been a very positive experience.
I want to acknowledge the depth of appreciation I feel for all of those who have engaged with my work and those who have been able to collect my paintings. Without that ongoing support, the pace at which I have worked and the joyful energy I feel every day would have been far more difficult to maintain.
To all the galleries I have worked with, the framers and printers, suppliers and people who have worked alongside me, your kindness has been valuable. A special thanks to Little River Gallery for their wonderful support since 2012.
To my family and friends, thank you for living with my eagerness to be in the studio at all hours.
It’s been a life that never ceases to be dull and has brought me huge joy to be able to reach such a wide audience both here and overseas, who can relate to my work.
It is a life most luscious!
