Earth Tones, a solo exhibition of compelling new paintings by Christchurch-based artist Christine Maynard.
Directly inspired by South Island terrain and scenery, Christine’s paintings though abstract in form, bring to mind familiar vistas, reimagined in mineral hues with tactile layers and flourishes of flora and water-like motifs.
“Unspoilt wilderness, lush rainforests, sculptured rock formations, rugged West Coast beaches, the many moods of Fiordland . . .as an artist, I am continually striving to adequately represent this natural beauty.
In this collection I have extensively used the umbers and the siennas to create a palette that is calming and familiar. The resulting earthy tones create an aesthetic that both warms us and grounds us.
I coax acrylic paint around the canvas with a sense of exploration, followed by a degree of control, to produce works capturing the essence of this visual paradise we call home.” – Christine Maynard
