Tim Wraight

Tim Wraight, an accomplished sculptor based in Mārahau, boasts a distinguished career spanning over 25 years. His artistic practice began with training in traditional whakairo (Māori carving) at Te Āwhina Marae in Motueka. Following in the footsteps of his ancestor John Henry Menzies of Menzies Bay, he has a deep appreciation for wood as a primary medium. Tim’s work is characterized by a profound fascination with patterns derived from both the Pacific world and his European heritage. These patterns are skilfully adapted and utilized to express ideas surrounding culture, the natural world, and humanity’s place within it.

Tim’s impressive portfolio includes appearances in numerous outdoor sculpture shows throughout New Zealand, as well as installations in public spaces, marae, and private collections, both domestically and internationally. He has also undertaken a commissioned project for the Christchurch City Council. This ambitious undertaking involved creating a large and intricately crafted sculpture now prominently displayed outside the new Bishopdale Library and Community Centre. In recognition of his artistic excellence, Tim was honoured with the Sculpture on the Peninsula Award in 2013.
