"The light in the South Island of New Zealand is distinct to other parts of the world due to its clear atmosphere and strong winds. The combination of this radiant light and mesmerizing landscapes create scenery that appears to pulse with it’s own language of light and colour. Switching to oil paint seemed to be the only option to try to capture the luminosity of this remarkable place. To me, oil paints exude a light of their own and, as a media, enliven my brushstrokes and do justice to the subject matter. All the scenes I’ve chosen to paint for ‘Southern Light’ are places that I visit often and that resonate strongly with me and those I hold dear.” - Harriet Millar
