Monique Reekers

Monique Reekers

Monique Reekers was born in Aotearoa New Zealand, and began her journey with carving stone over 25 years ago, initially working with limestone, before expanding into pounamu and other stones. She formally trained on the West Coast of the South Island, and her work has since evolved into a lifelong commitment to working with stone, guided by experience, learning, and deep respect for pounamu, reflecting her Ngāi Tahu Māori descent.

Her work is shaped by mātauranga toi Māori, lived experience, and a close relationship with the natural environment. A deeply spiritual person, who approaches each unique piece with careand intention, aiming to create work that feels balanced, considered, and meaningful.

Alongside larger pieces, Monique creates tactile jewellery designed to be worn and held close. These works emphasise touch, weight, and form, offering a sense of calm, grounding, and personal connection through everyday wear.

A highly qualified artist and a trained teacher, she has developed her skills through dedicated carving practice over many years. Passionate about every piece she creates, Monique takes time to explore shape, symbolism, and balance, allowing a sense of life and movement to flow through each piece.

Through her whakairo (carving), Monique hopes to offer others a sense of connection, healing, and joy—inviting people to engage with the intention and care held within each unique work.
