Lyttelton based sculptor Martin Cole’s studied Fine Arts at East Sydney Techinical College and began working with metal around 10 years ago. His interest and pleasure of the natural world informs his sculptural work which often depicts the many and varied creatures found in New Zealand. A concern for the environment has led Martin to work solely with found materials, to intriguing effect. His artworks, referred to as assemblages, are shaped as much by the objects used as the creature depicted. Cole’s insects, birds and frogs come to life formed from repurposed pieces with a previous life; a doorknob, coin or cutlery. Varying metals are skilfully welded together creating compelling patinas and textures.
