Kylie Matheson

Kylie Matheson

Kylie Matheson is a Dunedin-based ceramic artist renowned for her whimsical animal sculptures. Her work is deeply influenced by her lifelong passion for animals and her discovery of clay in 2011, which she found to be a natural medium for expressing texture, movement, and depth akin to animal fur and feathers.

After traveling New Zealand in a bus for seven years, Kylie settled in Dunedin and pursued a Diploma in Ceramics at Otago Polytechnic in 2014. Since then, she has been a full-time ceramic artist, working from her home studio. Her hand-built sculptures often depict animals in unlikely friendships and emotional scenarios, inviting viewers to create their own narratives. In her creative process, Matheson emphasizes the tactile qualities of clay, leaving the maker's hand evident in her sculptures.

Kylie's work has garnered recognition in the New Zealand art community. Notably, she received a Merit Award at the 2019 Portage Ceramic Awards for her piece "Yoke." Additionally, she was honored at the 2019 Cleveland National Art Awards, where her piece "Safe" earned her an award.

Kylie continues to exhibit her work in select galleries across New Zealand, sharing her unique perspective and love for animals through her art.
