Jane McCulla

Jane McCulla graduated as a mature student with a First Class BA (Hons) in Fine & Applied Art from the University of Ulster, Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 2006. She immigrated to New Zealand with her family in 2009, establishing a home-based studio in Riverton, Southland, and began supplying galleries with her ceramic pieces. A year later, she relocated to Christchurch.

Working from her home-based studio in Diamond Harbour, Canterbury, Jane creates textured, stretched stoneware vessels and forms. Her work features fluid textures that suggest geology, archaeology, and the traces of human activity on the landscape, evolving over time. She teaches classes and workshops throughout New Zealand and undertakes both private and public commissions, including the Lyttel People Land Art Mandala in Albion Square, Lyttelton.

Jane has been actively involved in the Ceramics Association of New Zealand, serving for over seven years as a Regional Council Member and Vice President. In 2017, she completed a seven-week residency at The Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China, renowned as the porcelain capital of the world. Her ceramics have been featured in numerous publications and exhibited in solo and national shows in London, the UK, Ireland, and New Zealand. Her work is held in private and public collections worldwide, and she has received several awards, including a Portage Merit Award in 2013.
