Georgina Hoby Scutt

Georgina Hoby Scutt is a Nelson-based New Zealand artist whose vibrant paintings explore the space between abstraction and representation. Working across landscape, still life and figurative subjects, she brings a distinctive, intuitive approach to each piece, with colour playing a central and defining role.

With a background in design, Georgina studied at the University of Otago before continuing her creative career overseas in London and Barcelona, where she worked in textile and print design. These experiences continue to inform her practice, particularly in her considered use of colour and composition.

Returning to New Zealand, she began painting professionally in the mid-2010s, developing a style that is both expressive and immediate. Her works are characterised by energetic brushwork and a looseness that allows forms to emerge rather than be strictly defined, often capturing a mood or atmosphere rather than a literal scene.

Influenced by modernist painting and a range of contemporary visual culture, Georgina draws inspiration from both the natural environment and the interplay of colour in everyday life. Her paintings balance structure with spontaneity, resulting in works that feel dynamic, layered and emotionally resonant.

Now widely exhibited across New Zealand, her work continues to evolve through an intuitive process driven by experimentation and a deep engagement with colour. The result is a body of work that is bold, expressive and unmistakably her own.
