Into The Slipstream

Information

Nelson-based painter Georgina Hoby Scutt invites viewers into a world where colour, movement, and feeling converge. In this new body of work, her paintings move beyond representation, allowing forms to loosen and diffuse. What remains are traces: of atmosphere, of movement, of remembered encounters with place, carried through layers of colour and gesture. Into the Slipstream sets the tone for a journey across landscapes both real and remembered, where every brushstroke carries a sense of presence and discovery.

"This body of work explores the shifting relationship between the physical landscape of New Zealand and the emotional landscapes we carry within us. Moving between observation and abstraction, these paintings respond to the country’s distinctive terrain - its vast skies, rugged coastlines, rolling hills and quiet expanses.

Rather than depicting specific locations, the works distil impressions of place: the rhythm of landforms, the movement of weather, and the subtle shifts of light that define the New Zealand environment. Layers of paint, gesture, and colour become a way of translating the experience of being within the landscape rather than simply looking at it.

At times recognisable horizons emerge; at others the land dissolves into fields of colour and texture. This movement between representation and abstraction reflects the way memory and perception shape how we see the land around us.

New Zealand’s landscapes hold a powerful presence - ancient, dynamic and ever-changing. These paintings seek to capture something of that presence: not as literal views, but as felt spaces that invite the viewer to pause, wander and reflect."
