Anna Evans

Anna Evans

“Anna Evans b. 1983, Rochdale UK, BFA Elam school of Fine Arts.

Anna’s practice explores the garden not as a static horticultural subject, but as a system of surreal orchestration.

Drawing on her background in critical art theory, Evans interrogates the tension between curated control and natural chaos.

Having emigrated to New Zealand as a child in 1994  Evans’ work is deeply informed by the sensory dissonance of migration. The vivid, high-saturated un-filtered light of Aotearoa contrasted against the muted, industrial tarnished landscape of her birthplace in Northern Manchester.

These paintings are memory-filtered botanical dreamscapes, emotional ecosystems acting as portals into the world beyond the veil. Here, the garden functions as a site of revelation and encapsulated time.

Making use of hyper-vivid colour, pools of shade and transitional light, Evans uses gardens as  signals of awakening. An anamnesis of a paradise that is perpetually present but all too often obscured.”
