The method of painting on glass is not new to New Zealand as quite a few artists have on and off painted on glass. But I first read about this technique in a book about Eastern European Artists from the" Naive tradition" of painting. Hard working men and women who lived in rural Europe would paint on glass in the evenings for relaxation. The panes of glass were inexpensive to acquire as a material and so they used it. Many painters remained hobbyists and others became very well known throughout Europe and beyond.

As they did, I paint with oil paint on the glass then look at the image from the other side of the pane. I particularly enjoy the surprise and the jewel effect /outcome. Of course, over the years I have painted on canvas and hardboard, but for now, I am interested in using glass.
